KCU has announced that work on the 2nd floor of the Kings Daughters building is underway. Funding has been obtained to complete the KCU School of Nursing by the Fall
Semester.


Graduation dates have been set-
East Carter, Tues June 3rd  7 pm
and West Carter June 4th 7 pm.


Go-Radio has received the National Association of Broadcasters 2008 Crystal Radio Award for excellence in public involvment, community service and local programming.  Go-Radio has now won 4 Crystal Awards.


The Ashland Community & Technical College Commencement Ceremony will honor 400 graduates at 7pm Fri. May 9th at the Paramount Arts Center with Representative Geoff Davis, the Commencement Speaker. The ceremony is free & open to the public.


The City of Grayson has received a $48,000 grant to put lights and a clock in the area of Hord and Pomeroy along North Main where new sidewalks will be poured.

East Carter JROTC takes first place overall in the 7 team event at Lawrence Co.  East has won top honors 9 out of past 10 years.

Attorneys for former Grayson Police Chief Keith Hill and Mayor George Steele and the City of Grayson appeared in Circuit Court May 5th.  Arguments were heard concerning the demotion of Hill from Chief to patrolman.  Judge Phillips has requested written presentations from the attorneys.  Meanwhile, the restraining order is still in force that prohibits the City from naming a new police chief until the matter is settled.

The County has lost its Extension agent for Family and Consumer Science, as Becky Clark has resigned.  The state has a hiring freeze so the position will remain vacant for the near future

Circuit Court has accepted a plea bargain agreement in the  case against Johnny  Puckett charged in the 2006 death of Constable  Elmer Kiser.  Puckett plead guilty to both 1st degree manslaughter and 1st degree drug trafficking and will serve a total of 15 years.

The East Carter High Site Based Decision Making Council is accepting nominations for parent reps until Fri. May 9th with election Wed. May 14th 3-6pm & Thurs. May 15th 8am-3:30pm. For more info, call 474-8821.


The Northeast Head Start Program is now recruiting children for an early enrollment for the 2008-09 school year. Pre-registration will be held Fri. May 16th 9am-2:30pm at the NE Community Action Agency in Olive Hill at 286-4444 and the Grayson Head Start Center on West Main Street at 474-4602.



The Commercial Bank Relay for Life team recently participated in the Carter Co Cleanup Campaign.  The team will earn a $50 donation from Go-Radio for their hard work.
The building once known as Grayson's Bagby Mansion and in 1953 became the headquarters of the Grayson RECC is getting its first major expansion since changes in 1991.  A two story addition is being added to the rear of the building allowing for much needed space.

The Annual Art in the Park Festival will be held on Sat. May 10th at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park with students from all four-area elementary schools participating in this event through art, drama & music. Student-created artwork will be displayed in the Greenbo Lodge May 9-12.  The performances will begin in the Amphitheater at 5pm with Students admitted free. Pre-sale Tickets are $3.00 at the 4 elementary schools and at the picnic shelter with tickets $5.00 at the gate of the Amphitheater.
The Memory Days Pageant will be held at 6pm Sat. May 17th at East Carter High with five age divisions for boys & eight for girls. Tiaras, medallions, trophies & banners will be presented to winners in beauty & photogenic divisions. Deadline for entry is Fri. May 16th. For more info, call 316-1046.


Starting May 2nd, the Absentee Machine will be setup for Voters who will not be in the county on Election Day during regular polling hours. The machine will be open regular business hours of Mon, Wed, Thurs & Fri 8:30am-4pm and Tues 8:30am-6pm and Sat 8:30am-12noon.

The KY Equine Education Project, known as KEEP will sponsor an Equine Seminar at 1pm Sat. May 10th at the Happy Trails Show Grounds located on US Hwy 60 east of Grayson. A Fish, Chicken & Spaghetti Lunch will be served. All horse lovers & the public are urged to attend this free event.


Prichard Elem. Pre-School & Kindergarten Registration will be Fri. May 16th 9am-2pm. A Certified Birth Certificate & a KY Immunization Record is required. An Eye Exam will be required before Jan. 1, 2009.

A trial date and location has been set for Robert Lee Drown who is charged in the May, 2007 deaths of three Carter Countians.  The trial has been set for December 1st in Johnson Co.


The KCU Graduation Weekend will be Fri. May 9th with Baccalaureate Service at 3pm in the Nash Chapel with guest speaker Mr. Phil Martin and Sat. May 10th Commencement at the Lusby Center Damron Hall at 10am with guest speaker Mr. Cam Huxford, Pres. of the 2008 N. American Christian Convention.


Judge Executive Charles Wallace has announced the dates for the Carter Co Cleanup Campaign.  Dumpsters will be on the West End, May 6th, 7th & 8th, 10am-7pm at the Rt. 174 & Mallord Drive, County Maintenance at Three Pines, Grahn Fire Dept., Rt. 2 Auction Barn & Burge Trucking in Carter City. ID must be presented as proof of residency. No Household Garbage, No Tires, No Paint, No Chemical & No Hazardous Waste will be allowed.
Just 10 minutes before the City of Grayson was to open bids on what could be a $1.9 million fire dept building, Mayor George Steele put a halt to the proceedings saying that the move could cost the city a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant.  The city was told by FIVCO that they stood a good chance getting the grant, but assurance of the grant must be known before any bids are open.  The project has been put on hold.

East Carter Concert Choir has received a Suprior Rating at the National Adjuticators Festival in Va Beach with a score of 98, the highest in the competition, receiving the special Honors award.  Bethany Brunelle received superior for her solo performance.

Grayson Police, Carter Co. Sheriffs
and FADE Task Force with federal officials announced the arrest of South Florida, physician, Dr. Roger Browne.  Browne was indicted for prescribing narcotics for eventual street sale to numeous residents in NE Kentucky, including Carter Co. 

Rep. Robin Webb and Sen. Charlie Borders have announced that coal severance money will return about 1.7 million to Carter Co. for water and sewer extension programs for Grayson, Olive Hill and Rattlesnake Ridge District. In addition, coal severance money will be used for some grants to local fire department.

The City of Olive Hill has voted to
make an application to sell its fire department building at 395 Tygart St. to the government because the structure is in the flood plain

The KY Cancer Program, known as KCP, invites women to a celebration featuring breast health information, refreshments & gifts with a special emphasis on reaching women who are age 65 or older, medically underserved, under-insured & rarely or never screened. Fiscal Court has revised its 2007-08 budget to take monies from the general fun to apply to the Carter Co. Detention Center.  The jail has lost most federal prisoners and the revenue associated with it.  The State police are conducting an investigation there into alleged misconduct by
at least two deputies who are on
administrative leave.
The East Carter Middle School PTSA will have a Spring Fling on the Sat. May 31st, 1-5pm at the ECMS Soccer Field with inflatables & much more. Everyone is welcome with admission $5 per arm band.

There will be a One Day Safe Sitter Program at Sara’s Place in Sandy Hook on Sat. June 7th 9am-3pm teaching children ages 11-13, how to handle emergencies when caring for children. Register by May 26th at 606-738-4270.

Organizers for a special event coming to Olive Hill on May 17th  have announced that Tom T Hall and Don Rigsby and Midnight Call will be in concert at the former Olive Hill School Building.  The event is sponsored by the Olive Hill Historical Society.  Tickets are available at Commercial Bank, Something Sassy and Chris' Guitar Shop.

Carter Co. Poetry Society Memory Days contest is underway with deadline May 12 to submit your poem on the theme "Grayson - a great place to come home to" with a  $25 cash for 1st place & the work
will be read at the Memory Days
opening ceremony.
